Makerere University has registered an increment of 1200 grandaunts compared to last year’s number with this year the institution going to pass out a total of 13636 compared to 2014’s 12616 with this year the university passingout 297 grandaunts with 1st class degrees slightly higher compared 244 for 2014.
Speaking to the university’s publicist, Rita Namisango ahead of the 65th graduation ceremony, she mentions that function slated for 21st to 23rd this month at the campus will see 6730 girls and 6906 boys pass out in various fields with diplomas, degrees among others.
She also reminds the grandaunts to only come along with two people accompanying them.
Mean while as universities start graduating student this year, UPE pioneer grandaunts are in a drive to start mentorship and voluntary service to the next generation in a bid to make the next generation love the programmee as well as giving back to those who introduced the programmee which they say has helped them elevate their education levels.
Addressing a press conference ahead of the coming 65th MUK graduation slated for next week, the national coordinator, UPE pioneers association, Jeremiah Keeya Mwanje says, amidst numerous challenges the programme faces, it has imparted better live and non live skills to Ugandan children who could not afford paying fees for their education.
As a way of thanking govt and celebrating their graduation UPE pioneers from all universities in the country will hold a massive graduation party in Mid February this year
The programe was started in 1997 as one of the MGDs programme to UN member states.
