Members of Parliament have demanded for the release of the Member of Parliament for Bukholi South Steven Mayende from police custody.
This came after the Minister of state for internal affairs James Baba, failed to satisfy the legislators with explanations he was giving on why their fellow legislator has been kept behind the police bars for more than 48 hours.
“During the course of the investigations, a number of suspects were apprehended and seven guns and many rounds of ammunition recovered. The investigations also came up with credible information linking Hon Stephen Mayende Dede to criminal activities.” Explained the Minister in response to the demands from the legislators
Hon Mayende was arrested on March 5, 2015 at Muterere District. He was later taken to Nalufenya Police station. His arrest is allegedly linked to the recent killings of Muslim bigwigs around the country.
The constitution of Uganda under Article 23 provides that anybody kept under police custody should be brought before court for formal charges within 48 hours of the arrest which has not happened in this case.
