Reduce foreign dependence in agriculture: Ambassador Irumba

The executive director SEATINI-Uganda, Ambassador Nathan Irumba, is cautioning governments of developing countries to desist from subjecting farmers to foreign dependence as this will drastically cause negative effects to agricultural development in these countries with Uganda being among them.

According to Ambassador Irumba the continued importation of various agriculture policies from developed countries will not at any time help the local farmer but will only front the agenda of the developed which will slow growth to the agriculture sector. However, Irumba notes that foreign dependence will also erode away local indigenous plants and seeds which in a long run will result into great problems to local farmers. He now reminds leaders in developing countries to think of protecting farmers than foreign agenda.
This comes at a time when Africa, and Uganda in particular, are welcoming in Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) as a way to facilitate food abundance. Meanwhile parliament is yet to pass the Biotechnology and biosafety law that is expected to regulate the GMOs.
