Fishermen and fish traders at Kasenyi landing site have staged a sit down strike protesting a move by the State Minister for Fisheries to ban the extracting and exportation of fish maw by Ugandan traders. Last month, extraction of fish maw from nile perch by the fishermen was banned saying a number of them extract maw from young fish noting that it does not give opportunity to young fish to mature, leading to depletion of fish stocks.
Over 300 fishermen staged a sit down strike today at Kasenyi landing site until the Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries rescinds his decision saying the Minister intends to push Ugandans dealing in fish from the business. They have now resolved to petition the Minister and have also urged the president to intervene.
