Manchester City crash Chelsea, Arsenal get a scrappy win at Crystal Palace

Manchester City demolished champions Chelsea 3-0 on Sunday to move into the top spot in the Premier League standings.

Argentine striker Sergio Aguero opened up the scoring for Man City in 31st minute after Chelsea goalkeeper Asmir Begovic denied City on several occasions at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany doubled the lead when he scored in the 79th minute with Fernandinho sealing off the game with a third goal in the 85th minute.

The victory capped City’s impressive start to the season following their 3-0 win at West Bromwich Albion and strengthened the belief of the title challenge.

The Defeat means that Chelsea have failed to win one of their first two league games for the first time since 1998.

Manuel Pellegrini was pleased after watching his Manchester City side register their second 3-0 win of the season against reigning champions Chelsea. Pellegrini said: “I’m very satisfied because it’s not easy to beat the champions. Chelsea are the best team, they won the title last season.

“In the first 45 minutes we deserved at least three goals. I think 3-0 is the minimum we deserved. “Last season we made a lot of mistakes, but we continue playing the same way. We’ve played just two games but in both we score three goals.

“We have more concentration in our defending, so that’s why we also have two clean sheets. It’s a balanced team but we never change the style.”

Man City now holds an early five-point advantage over Chelsea but Pellegrini claimed the difference was not significant at this stage of the campaign.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho stated that City’s 3-0 win was a fake result considering how good his team played in the second half.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Jose said: “The best team in the first half won the game.

“The best team in the second half was Chelsea for sure. We had a difficult first half, we didn’t create a lot and our goalkeeper made a few important saves.

“Second half everything was different. If the 1-0 was a doubtful result at minute 70, 3-0 is completely fake. At 1-0 Chelsea were the best team for the whole second half.”

Meanwhile Arsenal got their first win of the season with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Arsène Wenger’s side was much hyped after  a near to perfect pre-season but all their hopes of a title challenge were shuttered by a woeful 2-0 home defeat against West Ham United last weekend at the Emirates stadium.

Arsenal needed the win at all costs and got it after putting up a fight against Allan Pardew’s Crystal palace thanks to Olivier Giroud‘s superb 16th-minute volley and a Damien Delaney own goal in the 55th minute after Joel Ward had put Palace level.

The win is a confidence boost for the Gunners and Arsene Wenger was grateful for his side to recover after a dismal display against West ham, “I’m very pleased with the three points. If we had gone two games and zero points it would be absolutely difficult and we knew this would be a tricky one,” Wenger said.

“Last week we had a bit of a stroll and thought we would win the game.
“Today we played real Premier League football from the first minute to the last. With the ambitions we have made, you have to have full commitment and we had that today,” said Wenger.
