The Electoral Commission chairman, Eng. Badru Kigundu is now calling for more amendments into the current electoral laws to have special groups allowed to cast their votes ahead of the set date for the general electoral exercise. The call comes after a number of legible voters totaling to over 8000 missing out on voting as they are tied up on various duties which they cannot give up during the election time.
Among the groups Kigundu wants accorded special status during voting include, journalists, police and UPDF officers, Electoral commission workers, health workers observers among others.
While launching the Citizens’ Election Observers’ Network-Uganda (CEON–U) Kigundu also reminded the general public to own the electoral process and not leave it to the commission. Meanwhile, the chairperson of the newly formed observer group, Livngstone Sewanyana says over 900 local observers have been registered to oversee the coming electoral process across the country.
