Members of Parliament have unanimously passed a resolution urging government to develop a policy on National Youth Service and an internship programme. Youth unemployment is one of the major challenges in the employment sector and in the country’s development.
The Female National youth member of parliament Monicah Amoding says that one of the interventions is to institutionalize internship and entrepreneurship for hands-on training for both government and private organizations. Amoding assured government that the Scheme will enhance individuals’ successful progression from education to the world of work and from childhood to adulthood. She says that the Scheme will enhance the youth resource in the country, build leadership potential and capacity amongst the young people, as well as promote nation building and peace building. She added that if such a policy is put in place it will help in building character, citizenship, value and patriotism among young people.
The Resolution was moved under Rule 47 of the Rules of Procedure and passed by Parliament without a debate, anticipating that the government will comply.
