Members of parliament have expressed anger over the none issuance of National Identification cards to some registered Ugandans which could cause them to miss out voting in the 2016 polls. This as members of parliament were demanding the progress report on the issuance of the National ID. The speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga said that there is a public outcry over the national ID and people are in fear that they may not vote.
MPs who included the member of parliament for Busiro East Merdard Segona, woman MP Wakiso district Rosemary Seninde, MP for Lubaga south Ken Lukyamuzi and Jinja Municipality East Paul Mwiru demanded the electoral commission to explain to parliament what law they used to discard the old register and use the ID data. Lukyamuzi said that there are many people without National IDs in the country side including his wife .
The Attorney General Fred Ruhindi clarified to parliament that the purpose of the national ID is for identification, if one is to vote they should be on the voters’ register.
The minister for Internal Affairs Rose Akol said that people who registered for the National ID and have not got it should pick them at the district level and added that those whose National IDs had problems like misspelling of names its being worked on so as they receive them before voting. Akol clarified that no one should pay to receive his or her National ID.
