The member of parliament for Budadiri west in Sironko district Nathan Nadala Mafabi has opposed the proposed move of scrapping of Human rights and integrity courses at Makerere University. This as the authority at Makerere university is in a move for some of the courses to be either merged, dropped or restructured to give a holistic training to graduates.
While before parliament chaired by the deputy speaker Jacob Oulanyah, Nandala was opposed to dropping of these courses on the basis that it will be difficult for students to get jobs when they complete the university. He said that there is no way people will be patriotic when students are are not taught integrity in school. He wants parliament to intervene in this matter so as these two courses stay and demands that the minister of education explain in details why they want these courses scrapped before they are officially dropped .
The government chief whip says that government together with ministry of education have been liaising for curriculum evaluation for getting relevant courses by merging some; but scrapping it will not be a better choice.
Reports from Makerere University show that the authority recommended that 30 degree programmes be merged, 18 be restructured while 21 undergraduate diplomas, 11 undergraduate certificates and three degree programmes be phased out.
