The NRM electoral commission has set May 5th as a date on which NRM caucus MP-elects are going to select their candidate for speakership and deputy. This comes after, according to sources, NRM CEC sitting last night at Entebbe failed to come out with a sole candidate for speakership between Rebecca Kadaga and Jacob Oulanyah who want to become speaker.
According to the guidelines, anyone who wants to stand for deputy or speakership must be a gazetted NRM-elect member of parliament, implying that independent MPs Jacob Oboth and Wifred Nuwagaba who want to become deputy speaker have been blocked in the NRM primaries. The guidelines signed by NRM EC chairman Tanga Odoi, say anyone who is interested in any of the two posts must write to the NRM EC boss expressing interest, who after receiving the names, shall present names of those interested to CEC. He says when CEC gets the names for consideration, it shall recommend names to the NRM EC again for nominations and that upon getting the names, the EC is going to organize nominations and election of candidates for speakership and deputy.
Odoi says only gazetted NRM MP-elects are eligible to vote in primaries and there will be no voting by proxy.
The NRM Central executive committee also warned the people aspiring for the position of speaker of the 10th parliament to stop exchanging words in the media because it is not good for the family of NRM.
According to sources who attended this meeting the central executive committee of NRM also tasked the chairman of the party president Museveni to interact with both parties to end their differences for the good of the party.
Sources further reveal that the central executive committee which met on Monday evening at State house Entebbe also agreed that no NRM MP should stand against the NRM flag bearer for the post of speaker and deputy speaker as this will be looked upon as indiscipline.
CEC is yet to decide on which candidates will be in the race for the NRM parliamentary caucus elections.
