KAMPALA. Eleven including five children have been killed and fifty others injured following a shocking landslide in Bundibugyo district.
The mudslides occurred in Humya village in Bukonzo sub-county at around 4:00am on the morning of May 11, 2016 following a night of heavy rains.
The victims are admitted at Bundibugyo hospital. At least 30 houses were ruined and property buried in the mud.
Several hectares of crops were also washed away. David Baluku, a resident of Humya who survived the mudslides says he was sleeping when he heard ‘loud noise’.
According to Baluku, he shouted asking his wife and children to run out when mud struck from the roof.
Uganda Red Cross manager Bundibugyo branch Thomas Ndyanabo, says some of the survivors are being relocated to the Bubukwanga transit camp. He says that the dead will be identified after the bodies have been retrieved.
Bundibugyo LC five Chairperson, Jolly Tibamanya, says a team from the district has been dispatched to Humya village to assess the damage and to plan for relief supplies for some of the survivors who have sought refuge at Humya Catholic Church.
