Members of Parliament have today proposed a motion blocking a planned moved by government to bail out private companies to a tune of over 1.3 trillion Uganda shillings.
The move follows last week’s reports by the media listing a number of individuals who purportedly have struggling business who are said to have sought audience with President Museveni to clear their 65 loan-stressed-firms.
However, members of parliament say such a move will tantamount to the misuse of the Country’s public resources and should therefore not be accepted.
Abdu katuntu, the member of Parliament for Bugweri County in Iganga district, says that this motion should have been this week’s business but since parliament is off, he will lead other MPs next week and have this matter debated exhaustively if the speaker grants them permission.
“We have many other people who have lost their businesses and have never been bailed out before. Why should this other group be exceptional? He asked. We are not going to all anything of the sort,” charged Katuntu.
Other members of parliament who include the Member of Parliament for Buikwe South Constituency, David Mutebi and the Member of Parliament for Bunya south Robert Ntende agreed that the bail out for private companies needs vetting by Parliament.
According to media reports, government is in the process of adopting this proposal after private companies pleas since some of the companies are said to have been placed under receivership.
