The State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Okello Oryem has revealed to members sitting on Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs that government is in the process of visiting all Ugandans facing the death penalty in especially Asian countries such as China and Malaysia.
Appearing before the Committee Chaired by Rose Mutonyi Masaba, the Bubulo West MP in Manafwa district, Okello revealed that the ministry is negotiating with Chinese government to identify sick Ugandans that are sentenced to death over drugs in china to serve their sentences back home in Uganda.
He however, said that countries with strong laws on drugs especially china are skeptical to transfer Ugandans arrested for drugs, noting that Uganda’s laws on drugs are very weak therefore cannot apply serious punishments like life imprisonment or death.
He also noted that other countries with strong laws like Malaysia and China want Uganda to first strengthen its laws on drugs to avoid paying for the penalties then given bail and later go back to carry on the same deals of drugs.
They want Uganda to make commitments on laws concerning drugs by making them stronger so that they can able to allow those arrested over illegal drugs to punished in the country.
