Members of Parliament have been reassured of their allowances to purchase new cars despite a delay. The car issue has been one of the contentious issues among especially the new MPs who swore into office in May this year.

“We came here with a lot of debts and some of us are now sleeping in the living rooms of our relatives. How does parliament expect us to survive without such allowances,” said one MP (names withheld) when asked earlier by journalists about his comment on the car allowances said that they had expected to get the money immediately after joining Parliament.

Rebecca Kadaga, the Speaker of the Ugandan Parliament.

However, the MPs now have to worry no more following the revelation by the  Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga on Tuesday August 16, when she told the MPs that their vehicles allowances will be ready by October this year.

“Your can allowances have finally be settled. You will get the money to purchase the cars by October this year, so no more need for worries on this issue because it has finally been settled,” Kadaga said amidst cheers from the legislators.

Parliament will spend over 64 billion shillings on the purchase of vehicles for MPs of the 10th Parliament.

Each of the 427 Members of Parliament will receive an allocation of 150 million shillings according to a budget outline by the Parliamentary Commission buy his car.

It is not clear wether the money is a loan advanced to the legislators.
