Members of Parliament who are striving to ensure that government does not legalise abortion have asked government to undertake a nationwide sensitization on the dangers of unplanned pregnancies instead of making it legal to carry out abortions.
The group led by the Bufumbira East MP, Dr.Nsaba Buturo say that they have received information that the ministry of health has finalised drafting a bill titled: “Reducing maternal morbidity and mortality from unsafe abortion”. Which Buturo says is intended to legalise abortion under the disguise of reducing the number of women who die while giving birth.
Buturo claims that the bill is sponsored by western countries together with Civil Society Organisations (CSO) whom he says are pressuring government to pass the bill into law disguising it as trying to protect rights of women to have a right to decide whether to produce a child or not. He however, says that if they are protecting the rights of mothers who are even adults, who then is protecting the rights of the voiceless unborn child?Butoro asked .
The Woman Member of Parliament for Gulu district, Betty Ocan says that legalising abortion is the same as promoting immorality in the country as this will lead to girls engaging in unprotected sex with the assurance they can abort any time anywhere if they feel like it.
The Kazo County Member of Parlaiment, Gordon Bafaki says that they are not going to allow this bill to even step on the floor of parliament as they cannot allow a bill that is geared towards turning Uganda into a Godless and Heartless nation.
The Bunya south Member of Parliament Robert Ntende says that the country has other important things to take care of than legalising abortion citing passing this law will be putting the life of mothers at risk.
