The Ministry of Health has demanded recommendations from MPs on the best methods of distributing mama kits for pregnant mothers and reproductive health supplies.
This was demanded by the permanent secretary in the ministry of health, Dr.Assuman Lukwago, while briefing the female members of parliament under the Uganda Women Parliamentary Association on the progress of the implementation of the public finance Act 2015 which demands for gender budgeting at a meeting held at the ministry of health headquarters in Kampala on Friday.
Dr.Lukwago agreed with the female legislators that there is still poor supply of mama kits to pregnant mothers and advised that women MPs should provide the ministry with the way it can best supply them to mothers in all parts of the country.
He also partly blamed pregnant mothers’ poor supply of mama kits because they allow the health workers to sale mama kits to mothers without reporting them to law enforcement.
Female MPs led by the Chairperson of Uganda Women Parliamentary Association who is also the Kumi district woman MP, Monica Amoding complained to the ministry of health officials of poor supply of mama kits to mothers, saying that even where are distributed, some materials like towels are missing .
MPs who included; Bukoto East MP, Florence Namayanja, Lira district Woman MP, Joy Atim, Koboko district woman MP, Margaret Babadiri and Buliisa district woman MP, Norah Bigirwa, asked the ministry of health to sensitize mothers on what materials are required to be in mama kits to stop them being given kits with no materials and where necessary mama kits should be accompanied with some simple tablets like aspirin.
