Current Inspector Of Police Okoth Micheal Ochola

The Inspector General of Police, Martin Okoth Ochola, has assured Ugandans that the security situation in the country is peaceful.

Ochola, appearing before the Committee on Defense and Internal Affairs on Thursday, 19 April, 2018 said that the only challenge they face and which they are addressing, are pockets of criminality in the Kampala Metropolitan Area, Greater Masaka and isolated parts of the country.

Ochola said that the current security concerns majorly arise from the emerging crime of kidnappings, death of foreign nationals, car theft and land conflicts.

“All these kidnaps are characterised by demands of ransom. We have recorded seven cases of kidnaps and rescued five victims while two were murdered. Police is investigating all these cases and working tirelessly to ensure that the situation is contained,” said Ochola.

While responding to concerns raised by committee member, Muwanga Kivumbi (Butambala, DP) about abuse of human rights of suspects under police custody, the IGP revealed that Nalufenya, a facility infamous for torture of suspects, would soon be closed.

“The Director Legal Services in Police is drafting an order to close the facility, anytime, it will be closed,” said Ochola.
