News Release

The second course on Proposal Writing and Grant Management, Oral Communication and Presentation was held at the University of Nairobi, Chiromo Campus, Kenya. This short course is part of the module in the five day course on Scientific Communication and Publishing. The course started on 6 June and ran through to 8 June 2011 and was organized by the Training Centre in Communication (TCC).

The twenty four postgraduate participants were from the Kenya Industrial Research Institute (KIRDI), Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI), World Agroforestry Centre, Network for Ecofarming in Africa (NECOFA), Crops Research Institute (Cereals Department), which, is under the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The participants were from Kenya and Ghana.

The style of training was highly interactive complete with time allocated for discussions. The students had been encouraged to come with their own material, making it easier for them to critique their own work.

The course was conducted by Mr. Tonny Omwansa an ICT for Development specialist and a  PhD student at the  School of Computing and  Informatics  from the University of Nairobi and  Ms Joy  Owango a  Scientific Communications Consultant and manager of the Training Centre  in Communication.

Observers at the course were Prof Kenneth Mavuti from the University of Nairobi and Howard Akimala from the German Fund for World Population (DSW).

TCC is a not for profit organization set up in 2006 and is in partnership with the University of Nairobi and is the first African-based Training Centre to teach effective communication skills. TCC is based in the University of Nairobi, Gecaga Institute, Chiromo Campus, and Nairobi, Kenya. The centre’s mission is to contribute to the increase in profile, locally, and internationally, of African science, and its impact on the life of Africans, by improving skills in technical communication in all forms, at academia and other relevant forums, in the African countries.

The next training will be a short course on Scientific Communication and Publishing, which, will be held on 15-19 August 2011.
