President Yoweri Museveni has ordered Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to rid the city streets of vendors immediately.
This follows complaints by traders about vendors whom they say sell similar merchandise on streets outside the shops of traders yet the traders pay licenses and rent for the shops to sell merchandise.
The president is reported to have called for the eviction at a meeting with leaders of traders at his home in Rwakitura, over the weekend.
Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA) Everest Kayondo says the president urged the executive director of KCCA Jennifer Musisi Ssemakula to clean the city by starting with removing the vendors.
Kayondo quotes the president as having told them that the vendors are not supposed to do business on the streets.
However in Musisi dismissed reports that she had ordered for the eviction of the vendors from city streets.
There were reports that she had given the vendors a two weeks ultimatum to vacate the streets.
