WHO urged to specify on contraceptive use impact on HIV infection

The International Community of women living with HIV (ICW) is asking the World Health organisation to speed up a conclusive research that clearly stipulates the fate of using injectable hormonal contraceptives by women.

This follows the publication for the media release by the WHO last week that indicated a non conclusive research that women using such contraceptives are at a high risk of contracting HIV while those who are already infected have high chances of infecting their partners.

The HIV prevention research and Advocacy at Officer at ICW Lydia Mulwanyi say the suspicious situation left by WHO puts lives of women at risk since now they don’t know clearly if the use of injectable contraceptives is dangerous or not.

She told journalists at the ICW offices in Kampala that the UN health agency needs to generate conclusive information on the matter so that women are well guided.

During the same press briefing, the Regional Coordinator ICW East Africa Lillian Mworeko expressed concerned that this condition on the use of injectable contraceptives might not be understood by health workers who are responsible for sensitizing women first before they can decide on their own whether to use the method or not.

She says the WHO must act fast and clear the situation.
