Mulago National Referral hospital administration and AAR Health Services appeared before a Kampala court to defend themselves in a case of negligence against them.
The side of the plaintiff alleges that the case resulted into the death of MP Bernard Mulengani’s wife, ms Gloria Kyansimire. Ms Gloria Kyasimire died on February 7, 2010 reportedly due to a blood mismatch. She was given a transfusion of blood group B+, yet she was O+ class.
Bernard Mulengani, a member of the East African Legislative Assembly is demanding 542 million shillings as compensation for loss of his wife Ms Gloria.
Mulengani told court that his wife Gloria received antenatal services from AAR between 2009 and 2010, and she was being treated by Dr Miriam Nakalembe. Ms Nakalembe is a consultant gynecologist working for both Mulago hospital and AAR.
The EALA member claims that at the time his wife Gloria was admitted to Mulago hospital, she was also attended to by Dr. Nakalembe. Mulengani says that it was Nakalembe who even reportedly proposed to take the deceased to Mulago hospital. He says that he sued Mulago hospital jointly with AAR because before going to Mulago Hospital, his wife attended antenatal care at AAR. The MP claims that in the course of her attendance at AAR, AAR sampled her blood and negligently classified it as B+ when she was O+.
Mulengani says thatAAR reportedly mixed up the blood samples. He says that its management marked the blood sample of another female patient with the name of Gloria and as a result of the negligence of the staff atAAR, Mulago hospital relied on the same to transfuse blood, which turned out to Gloria’s death.
