Truck drivers peacefully staged a strike at the Busia Uganda Kenya border. No truck has been able to enter into Uganda or Kenya since morning of Thursday this week because of weighbridge!
No taxi collections have been made at the Kenya-Uganda boader since Thursday last week by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).
Tens of drivers who come from Mombasa to Busia pass through a lot of weighbridges. They say that being weigh bridged is okay but on arrival at Busia station Uganda government officials ask them corruption. That is where the problem of the strike comes from.
The truck drivers recently appealed to Engineer Ibrahim Byandala (transport minister) to come to their rescue because their complaints are genuine but the minister did not help them.
The drivers say they are sent to courts of law and asked to pay five hundred thousand shillings but they are given a receipt of fifty thousand shillings.
“How can that be explained to the owner of the truck?,” John Orombi, one of the truck drivers asks. Orombi also asks why are the weighbridges in Uganda different from those in other countries like Tanzania and Kenya where they get these goods from? The truck drivers want Byandala to come out and explain this.
