Parliament’s legal affairs committee has rejected a request by the Parliamentary commission for extension of its tenancy agreement at Bauman house.
Appearing before the committee today, members of the commission had asked Mps to allow extension of the contract for one year noting that it would be unpractical to terminate it by 30th May next year.
The commissioners led by Dr Chris Baryomunsi argued that this was because the ministry of education and the president’s office had not made any communication as to when they were to leave development house for Mps to relocate from Bauman.
However committee chairperson Stephen Tashobya said over 2 Bn continues to be spent annually in rent thus the need for action now.
He says the prime minister is to be summoned to explain the delayed relocation.
Government took a decision to evict the Ministry of Education from Development House as a trade-off for one of the Parliamentary wings which President Museveni has refused to vacate.
The president was supposed to shift from the parliamentary premises to the new offices but later made a decision not to do so.
