Democratic Party (DP) is the oldest political party in Uganda having been formed in 1954. DP believes in non violent multi-party democracy and has been the vanguard in advocating for the rule of law in the country. The party, according to its president Norbert Mao is a strong proponent of dialogue as the best means of resolving conflicts and in that breath DP is a key member of the ‘Inter-party organisation for dialogue (IPOD), a dialogue platform for the parliamentary political parties in Uganda.
Inter-party organisation for dialogue is supported by the Netherlands Institute for Multi Party Democracy (NIMD) under a two prolonged programme, ie generic fund for common programs benefiting all member parties on the platform and the bilateral support for the individual member parties. Under the bilateral package, NIMD last week availed two billion shillings to DP to support the strengthening of party structures. Mao says DP is grateful for this opportunity and now plans to use the funds to open regional offices in Gulu, Masaka, Mbarara and Mbale, launch anti president Museveni programes and moblise Ugandans to vote out Uganda’s ruling party in the forth coming general elections.
