As the world marks the international day of the girl child, the Ugandan govt together with its development partners have on this day released three reports on the vulnerability of the girl child in the country with the girl child in Karamoja region being at the highest risk of the problem which has raised concerns on how programmes are implemented among other social economic concerns.
Among the reports being the adolescent girls vulnerability index (AGI) indicates that the girl child between ages, 10 and 19 in Karamoja region are at 53.6% vulnerability risk, Westnile at 26%, western region at 12% and central XX% with 20.6% for the whole nation and with such alarming indicators, this shows a worrying future for girls in this country which calls for doubled efforts to turn around things.
However, the state minister for children and the youth Ronald Kibule while speaking at the ceremony, confirms that gilr child discrimination exists and needs more attention coupled with empowering girls too live a better life and have a brighter future but notes that boys should not be forgotten in the cause
Meanwhile, the chairperson parliamentary forum on children Hon. Florance Mutyabule, national youth MP, Monicah Amoding and the chairperson gender committee of parliament, Hon. Margaret Kyamuhangi all castigate the failure by govt to implement the existing children’s policies as well as the need to engage cultural, political leaders and parents to change the bad statistics presented.
Now the development partners including UNICEF, Plan Uganda among other recommend that key characteristics of successful girls programmees be implemented, focus on asset building for adolescent girls, increase programming option for girls in Karamoja to better their lives.
