The former president general of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Col. Kiiza Besigye has put it on record to capture his displeasure on the manner in which he together with other opposition leaders like the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago Elias and Ingrid Turinawe were treated on independence day cerebrations in WESTERN Uganda.
He told his FDC members in Kampala on Friday that they received invitation cards from Uganda government and politely attended the function. “We honestly believed it was to be a national function and not a National Resistance Movement (NRM) function,’ he says.
Indeed TVs captured Dr Besigye and Lukwago seated calmly and enjoying the UPDF parade. Then from nowhere, Besigye says, NRM media boss Ofwono Opondo got to the microphone and begun assuring the president that the people who had attended the function had come to re-commit their faith to NRM.
Besigye says that Opondo’s statement became clear that the function was an NRM function and not a national celebration. The former FDC president says then they walked out of the function because they did not want to be included in the NRM bandwagon of new converts. President Museveni last week asked Dr Besigye and Lukwago to repent and join NRM.
