Ugandans welcome new government plan to expel Indians

 

Like the former Ugandan president Iddi Amin Dada expelled Indians and sections of Ugandans jubilated, the same Ugandans have welcomed the new government plan to get ride of Indians carrying out petty trading in East Africa’s third economy, Uganda.

Ugandan laws forbid foreigners including Asians from carrying out petty businesses. But there are many Asians who come as investors or tourists and end up selling tomatoes in markets. In Uganda, any foreigner whose business capital is below $100,000 is categorized as a petty trader.

The government of Uganda is currently in advanced stages of amending the trade licensing act with a view to streamline the trace licensing process, provide deterrent measures and to weed out foreign petty traders.
