Following yesterday’s corruption report released by human rights watch pinning government for failing to deal with the cases of corruption in the country, govt has today come out to state that it has done more than enough to fight the syndrome since the OPM scandal.
Speaking at a press conference in Kampala today, the ethics minister, Rev.father Simon Lokodo states that numerous steps have been put in place to crack down acts of financial mismanagement among govt officers.
Lokodo adds that since the office of the prime minister scandal many changes have been done to see to it that there is full accountability among public officers but does not rule out the fact that the acts of corruption are still exhibited in govt departments which is costing govt.
The report highlights that, Uganda government has failed to hold to account senior officials implicated in the theft and diversion of public funds.
The 63 reports titled “Letting the Big Fish Swim” shows that no high ranking government officials, minister or political appointee has ever served a prison sentence despite investigations into numerous corruption scandals over many years in Uganda.
Maria burnet the senior researcher with human rights watch has noted that the lack of political will to fight corruption has crippled Uganda’s anti corruption struggles.
Over 87 billion shillings according to the report have been stolen from different government department for the last 5 years leaving the meant beneficiaries in untold suffering.
