Sections of Catholic bishops in Uganda have defended a big-spending German Catholic bishop Peter Tebartz-van Elst, dubbed the “bling bishop” by the press for his extravagances. The Ugandan catholic clerics told this writer at Rubaga Catholic Cathedral that Bishop Peter Tebartz- Van Elst is a human being like all others even though he is a bishop.
So, one of the top leaders of Catholic Church in Uganda says, the Pope should allow Bishop Peter to enjoy his luxury. The Ugandan catholic cleric, known for his controversial statements, said Catholic Church leaders are barred from enjoying marriages, so they should be allowed to enjoy luxury if the chance knocks. The Ugandan Catholic Church chief continues, “this is where the Anglican Church beats us, it doest keep its priests in slavery.”
Bishop Peter Tebartz-van Elst was on Monday summoned to appear before Pope Francis to explain his extravagant lifestyle.
The conservative leaders in the Catholic Church accuse Tebartz-van Elst of taking a business-class ticket on his trip to India and building to himself a brand-new bishop’s palace.
