Lawmakers have been split over the draft Bio-safety and Biotechnology law as some support its passing while others call for its withdrawal to permit its re-drafting.
After an interaction with Activists on the gaps in the draft bill, Member of parliament especially those sitting on the science and technology committee of Parliament said the bill must pass as soon as possible for purposes of regulating Bio technology in the country. Luuka county Member of parliament John Bagole and Kapelebyong County Member of parliament Peter Eriaku said that the country needs the law in order to protect the people against bio technology and at the same time increase food production for the high population.
However other lawmakers supported activists saying the Biosafety and Biotechnology Bill 2012 should be withdrawn and be redrafted to avert the adverse consequences of the Genetic Modified Foods the bill introduces.
Matheniko County MP John Bapist Lokii, Kalungu West MP Joseph Ssewungu and Kyenjojo District woman Member of parliament Lindah Timbigamba say Ugandans need to be protected against the foods that pose serious health risks related to Genetically Modified Foods.
Bridget Mugambe from the Southern and Eastern African Trade Information and Negotiations institute appealed to parliament to redraft the bill to provide strict liability to the person or company responsible for the activity introducing Genetically Modified Foods.
