URA STORMS GARDEN CITY & NAKUMATI OVER TAX PAYMENT 5TH/NOV/13.

Business has come at standstill in some shops at both Nakumati and Garden city shopping malls after an abrupt storm by the URA to effect its mandate of collecting taxes.

The manager Domestic tax in Kampala central Hajji Kiguli Siraje says this is a full week operation in Kampala to track tax defaulters as well as assess tax payments for those found not registered with URA to pay tax yet they are operating businesses.

In this operation, the Authority found that of about 80 shops at Nakumat, 40% of these have been found operating without paying tax while at garden City, out of 100 shops here, 50% have also been found to be defaulting tax.

Hajji Kiguli says this is an exercise to widen the tax base as means of collecting the target revenue of 8.5trillion mandated to URA in this financial year 2013/14.Cue.Kiguli.Lug.

Meanwhile, some of business owners at these two shopping malls expressed disappointment over URA’s abrupt operation saying they needed to be informed about it to save them the embarrassment.Cue.Owners.Lug.
