The Uganda opposition Member of Parliament for Kampala Central Division Erias Luikwago has indicated that reducing the registration fees for Uganda Boda Boda riders will not help them get out of poverty.
During the reading of the 2010/11 Uganda National Budget by Finance Minister Syda Bbumba, at Kampala Serena Hotel on 10th June, 2010, registration fees for Bodaboda cyclists were reduced by Uganda shillings 80,000.
He says the move was a populist measure by the ruling NRM government to win votes of Boda boda riders in the coming 2010/11 Uganda general elections.
Lukwago says the government should intervene in solving the core problems facing Uganda Boda boda riders like failure to pay loans through giving them low interest rate loans.
He says that although the initiative is good, it will only help the Uganda middle class who own the motorcycles.
The Kampala MP appealed to the government to reduce the importation of motorcycles and find better alternative employment to help them get out of poverty hence uplifting their living standards.
