Hoima district woman Member of Parliament, Tophas Kahwa is opposed to the banning of traditional birth attendants saying that in many hard to reach areas they have bridged a gap to help deliver mothers that cannot access health centres.
Kahwa says that instead of phasing out the traditional birth attendants government should improve on their skills by training them.
Kahwa says that the number of women in the country who get problems as a result of labor complications keep on increasing due to long distances from their homes to the health centres, poor attitudes of some health workers, lack of drugs in health centres among other factors.
Some legislators have suggested to ministry of health to phase out traditional birth attendants due to lack of skills to handle mothers in labor which has led to loss of lives and diseases such as fistulla.
