On 15th November 2013 the Foundation for Human Rights Initiative issued a news statement that shook the African community. The statement revealed that one of its staff members, one Vincent Vessy Nuwagaba had raped one of the FHRI staff member (names withheld).
The Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI) informed the general public, its partners and membership that a Nuwagaba, who has been associated with FHRI as a member has of recent been involved in criminal acts of violence, abuse, including misinformation that the foundation is corrupt.
He has on a number of occasions been arrested and prosecuted and on one incident in 2010, Nuwagaba was convicted and jailed at Luzira prison for a period of 10 months.
In 2012, the same man reportedly assaulted a police officer at the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) and was subsequently charged at Buganda Road Magistrate’s court while on two other occasions; he assaulted officials at Makerere University and subsequently abused the magistrate hearing the matter.
Of recent, he has been engaged in criminal acts of violence against staff at the FHRI. According to the press release by FHRI Nuwagaba on 18th October 2013 attempted to rape a member of staff and on 1st November 2013, he attacked and severally bit a male member of staff. He was arrested and detained at Kabalagala Police station and subsequently charged at Makindye Chief Magistrate’s court on the 8th of November, 2013. He was remanded to Luzira Prison from where he was released on bail on the 12th of November, 2013…..
