UGANDA TOILET FIGURE WORRYING & MINISTER CALL FOR ACTION 19TH/NOV/13.

With the year 2015 now knocking on the door with many targets to be fulfilled by govt, experts are now warning that Uganda will not be able to realize the MGD target on sanitation as witnessed in the worrying toilet coverage across the country as reports indicate that Uganda to achieve the set target will need to move until 2080.

Speaking at the dialogue to mark the global toilet day today in Kampala, the state minister for health in charge of primary health care, Sara Opendi challenged development partners and stop holding many meeting with the converted and resort to action if the country is to realize change in its sanitation status.

Opendi also ads that the issue of sanitation is not a one man show to fulfill but needs collective efforts to deal with and here she urges all district leaders to set up by-laws in regards to this issue.

However, the minister also wants districts that are performing worst in latrine coverage named and shamed coupled with a strong call to Ugandans to have a massive behavioral and cultural change in this filed.

In a related development, the secretary parliamentary forum on water, sanitation and hygiene, Hon. Acayo Christine mentions that there is need to push govt hard to pay more attention to the issues of water, hygiene and sanitation.

And the chairperson national sanitation working group, Samuel Mutono notes that the 71% toilet coverage in the country still indicates low coverage as compared to the 0.3% speed at which the coverage is rolling out among different communities in the country adding that failure to have latrines comes along with many challenges to the nation and the families.
