Thousands of people living along Kampala –Entebbe road may soon be in tears as the government has accepted the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and police to evict them to pave way for further development.
As it is now almost a policy in Uganda government, no resident will be compensated before eviction. Yet some of the people have lived on the land for over 40 years. NSSF plans to evict the people such that it starts off the construction of morden and high class housing units beginning next year.
The NSSF managing director Richard Byarugaba says the $400m (Uganda shillings 100 billion) project will target middle income class of people. He says the NSSF project is in line with the real estate investment strategy of the fund. Byarugaba declined to comment on the fate of people who the project will affect. But another NSSF official who declined to be mentioned said that when development clocks in the poor people, snakes and animals go where they belong…
The NSSF official who declined to be mentioned said that the project to be implemented in 10 phases would be owned by NSSF, National Water and sewerage corporation, UMEME and some government officials would automatically have a hand.
