Parliament petitioned over inflating of prices of the antiretroviral drugs procured by the National Drugs Authority

Anti-Corruption crusaders have asked parliament to take interest in the implementation of recommendations by the Inspectorate of government in regard to the contested procurement of Anti-retroviral drugs from Quality Chemical Uganda Limited.
The office of the inspectorate of government investigated the bleach of the contract by Quality Chemicals Company that resulted into inflating of prices of the antiretroviral drugs procured by the National Drugs Authority which caused financial loss to government.
Petitioning the speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga, the anti-graft activists under their umbrella body the Anti-corruption Coalition Uganda, explained that based on its investigations, the office of the IGG, recommended that the Company refunds 44 billion shillings after abused the 15% mark-up meant for drugs produced locally
The executive Director Anti-Corruption Coalition Cissy kagaba explains that two other reports to parliament stressed the bleached contract by the Quality Chemical resulting into theft of tax payers’ money. Kagaba says parliament should ensure that the tax payers’ money is recovered as recommended.
Kagaba further explained how Quality chemicals bleached the contract signed with government to produce and avail Anti-retroviral drugs at a cheaper cost which was not the case.
The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga pledged to crosscheck with the relevant committees of parliament to ascertain on the progress of the IGG and Auditor General’s reports. Kadaga added that she would ensure that committee accord the petitioners an opportunity for public hearing regarding the matters.
