Roofings Uganda is set to unveil its 300 billion shillings ($120 million) plant setting the stage for a boost in the production of steel products in Uganda.
The Roofings plant will be used to manufacture galvanised and coiled iron sheets and other heavy steel products starting this month of December 2013.
Mr Oliver Lalani, the company’s executive director, says that by the end of December 2013 phase III of the plant, which will occupy 29 acres will be complete and will have the ability to produce 40,000 tonnes of painted coils and 80,000 tonnes of galvanised sheets per year.
Roofings, which controls over 50 per cent of the steel merchandise in Uganda produces for its own plant and also other players. The project will operate with 42 megawatts of hydro power. However Roofings finds challenges such as limited steel metal scrap supply in Uganda.
