In a bid to reduce the post harvest fish losses in the country, the Food Agricultural Organization is set to embark on a campaign that will engage the fishing communities on better fishing handling processes.
The Awareness campaign dubbed clean Fish Better Life under the Smart Fish program was prompted after, it was established that a lot of quality fish and subsequent revenues are lost due to poor handling, storage, transportation and processing of fish products.
According to the Food and Agricultural Organization, there is need to reduce the post harvest fish losses to bridge the gap that is created due to the declining fish stocks in Uganda and other Africa waters.
The Food and Agricultural Organization Country representative Alhaji M.Jallow says that Uganda losses 10 % of small fish (mukene) in the dry season while the figure stands at 90% in the Rainy Season.
Jallow says in addition to losing 1.5 million Dollars due to Mukene Post harvest loss alone, the population loses the high protein nutrition values which are vital in addressing malnutrition.
He says it therefore imperative that next January 2014, the organization will start using participatory videos to engage the communities through mobile cinema in order to create awareness on how best the people can maximize from the quality fish. The awareness campaign will be disseminated along 12 major landing sites around Lake Victoria
