The third stage of syphilis which is also called latent syphilis begins when symptoms of secondary syphilis are over. Some of the symptoms of secondary stage of syphilis are sore throat, tiredness, headache and swollen lymph glands.
In early stage of latent syphilis, the person might notice signs and symptoms, but the infection remains in his or her body.
When one is suffering from the third stage of syphilis, she or he can still infect a sexual partner. In late latent syphilis, the infection is quiet and the risk of infecting a sexual partner is low or absent.
However, if one is not treated for latent syphilis, he or she will progress to tertiary syphilis, which is the most serious stage of syphilis.
