It sounds weird but it is true. MakerereUniversity female students are regularly raped in lecture rooms, corridors and in bathrooms. The University police station’s chief and chief security officer, Mr Jackson Mucunguzi confirms that university girls are often raped though many of them do not want to report.
He says at least five girls are raped at Makerere every month due to MakerereUniversity’s failure to install CCTV security cameras and improve security lighting at the university.
Mr Jackson Mucunguzi says reports indicate that these girls are sometimes raped by their fellow male students, lecturers, in addition to strangers. He says police have brought this to the attention of the university management.
Much of MakerereUniversity land is not fenced and has no lights leading to all sorts of trespass by all manner of people including rapists.
