The prime minister of Uganda, Amama Mbabazi a couple of weeks back explained to MPs why the government of president Museveni was suspending funding to private schools partnering with it in the implementation of universal secondary education.

In his meeting with MPs, Mbabazi said the government of Uganda spends over 53 billion shillings every year to the private schools in order for them to run the programme.

The over 53 billion shillings would now be added on to the budget of Uganda government to build “seed schools.”

Education minister Jessica Alupo says the withdrawal of funding would be done in phases in a period of five years- meaning that every year the government will be withdrawing from the implementation of universal secondary education.
