Risk factors and symptoms of brucellosis

 

Brucellosis is very rare in the United   States. But other parts of the world including Uganda have much higher rates of brucellosis infection.

Brucellosis is especially common around the Mediterranean Sea, Eastern Europe, Latin America, Asia, the Caribbean and the Middle East according to doctors in world universities.

The people who live or travel in these areas are more likely to consume unpasteurized goat cheese, sometimes called village cheese. Unpasteurized goat cheese imported from Mexico has been linked to many cases of brucellosis in the United States and around the world.

People who work with animals or come into contact with infected blood are at higher risk of brucellosis. The people at most risk ofcontracting brucellosis include veterinarians, dairy farmers, ranchers, slaughterhouse workers, hunters and microbiologists.

The symptoms of brucellosis may show up anytime from a few days to a few months after you’re infected. Signs and symptoms are similar to those of the flu and include: fever, chills, sweats, and weakness, fatigue, joint, muscle and back pain and headache.
