The Tobacco control bill 2014 has caused Tobacco companies to hike the price of tobacco to lure the tobacco farmers not to abandon its growing.
Appearing before the Health committee which is currently handling the bill the commissioner in the ministry of Agriculture Samuel Semanda said that he has received information that in the next two weeks the price of tobacco will increase from 2000 shillings to 5000 shillings per kilograme.
He told the committee chaired by Keneth Omona that he supports the Tobacco control bill but it should only regulate the Tobacco industry instead of banning it.
He said that it will be difficult to discourage now tobacco farming since tobacco farmers have resolved to pay them good money unlike before.
Currently the Uganda fetches close to 100 million dollars from exported tobacco per season and tobacco is grown in 25 district of Uganda.
The woman member of parliament for Marach district Lematia Ruth Andoru said that if she gets to know who introduced tobacco growing in west nile would sue him or her for having caused the region losing the fertility of the soil.
She said that soil in west nile has become infertile due deforestation for growing tobacco.
The new bill on tabacco control seeks to regulate tobacco use and ban children of 20 years and below to smoke.
