ministers disagree on tobacco control bill

The health committee of parliament has started scrutinizing thetobacco control bill 2014 with ministers of trade and health disagreeing on this bill.

The state minister for health Sarah Opendi told the committee that
the bill is very necessary because the benefits related to tobacco
growing in the country are minimal compared to what Government injects
in treating the cancer patients.

Opendi adds that Government puts over 10.7 billion shillings every
financial year in the cancer institute for buying drugs.

Mean while junior minister for trade and industry James Mutende says
there should be a way to regulate smokers other than coming up with
proposal to have smokers move at least 100 kilo meters away from the
public place saying that such a law will be very difficult to
implement.
Mutende says that Tobacco consumption should not be focused on as the
only cause of cancer yet there many other things that cause cancer.
