President Yoweri Museveni who is also the NRM party chairman has called for unity ahead of the Luwero women by-elections telling supporters that the party needs to consolidate its gains to have a stronger voice in parliament.
He called upon those who were intending to stand against the official flag bearer as independents to unite and harmonize for the good of the party. He said that now that NRM party has strengthened its support around the country, supporters and party leaders in Luwero district should follow suit.
“NRM is gaining everywhere so we have to agree on one candidate to increase our chances of winning this by election,” he counseled.
The President urged the people of Luwero to always vote for leaders who will support and monitor government programs saying that those who oppose such programs delay development and services to Ugandans.
The President was yesterday addressing NRM local leaders during their consultative meeting at the Kasana Archdiocese open grounds in Luwero District during which he emphasized unity and the need to always highlight NRMs achievements over the years.
He pointed out some achievements that the party has done citing infrastructure development, electricity generation, improvement in education and health among others adding that those not yet done will be done soon with the widening tax base.
The Appellate Court ruled recently that former MP Brenda Nabukenya vacates the seat on grounds that the process which brought her to parliament was not conducted in accordance with the law.
In the ruling, Court emphasized that the Electoral Commission didn’t comply with electoral laws when in November 2011 Nabukenya’s political rival Rebecca Lukwago Nalwanga sought a mandatory vote recount. The Electoral Commission has set May 22 as the date for the by election.
Following the court ruling five contestants from the NRM including Rebecca Nalwanga, Dr Elizabeth Lugudde, Ramlah Kadala, Lilian Nakate, Ms Jimiya Ssenkanja and Rita Mugalu declared their interest in the seat.
The meeting was attended by Minister without portfolio Hon Richard Twodong, NRM Chairman Central Al Haji Naduuli and State Minister for Higher Education Chrysostom Muyingo among others.
