Polygamy to be out lawed in Uganda

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah has asked the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs to report to Parliament the status of the Marriage and Divorce Bill.

Oulanyah says that discussions on the Marriage and Divorce Bill had started in 2013 but the government requested for more time to consult more on the Bill.

The speaker calls on government to report on the progress so far made the Marriage and Divorce Bill. Under the Marriage and Divorce Bill, women want men to first ask them for permission to marry another wife. And once the woman has refused, the man will not be allowed to marry another wife. The bill is against Islamic and African norms and traditions where a man is allowed to marry more than one woman.
