Ugandans poison lions

Uganda’s total population of lions has reduced from 600 between 1999 and 2003, to 416 in the period between 2007 and 2010 according to reports at Uganda Wildlife Authority that our reporters have seen.

The population of lions in Uganda is reducing due to human activities including oil exploration, swamp reclamation, infrastructure developments, cattle grazing and deforestration.

The problem is worse in areas where the government of Uganda discovered oil. However, the Uganda Wildlife Authority spokesperson, Jossy Muhangi says the cause of decline in the lion population not due to the activities of oil exploration.

Muhangi says Ugandan population poisons the lions. He cites an example of the Basogola tribe in western Uganda who poisoned lions at Queen Elizabeth National Park after the lions became a threat to their cattle.
