Human rights activists advocate for minimum wage

Human rights defenders welcome the government’s commitment towards putting in place the much demanded minimum wage noting that this will greatly help in protection of the country’s workforce.

During the just concluded International Labor Organization summit Uganda’s labor minister pledged that government will in the next financial year put in place a minimum wage as required by international standards.

The UN Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders Margaret Ssekagya says the country should comply to its obligations to ensure the workforce attains improved standards of living.

Ssekagya says one of the very fast individuals to advocate for the minimum wage back in the 90s says the latest development is a move in the right direction and notes that once put in place, workers should ensure that their employer’s comply to the law.
