MPs pressurize Kayihura to improve security at parliament

The Inspector General of Police Gen. Kale Kayihura has been tasked to work out measures intended to improve the security of Members of Parliament.

The move follows an incident in which some opposition youths beat the existing Parliament security and smuggled piglets into its precincts. The incident alarmed MPs about the state of their security while they are in parliament.

The MPs want Kayihura to tell them how best they can be protected. Kayihura says he will give details of how he intends to protect MPs in a report to Parliament this Thursday.

He says that he is in consultations with the Parliamentary Commission and the Clerk. He wants to ensure that Members and staff of parliament are secure while they do their work at parliament.

Kayihura and the heads of Parliament Police Directorate Tuesday toured the precincts of Parliament.

Abdu Katuntu (FDC, Bugweri) wondered why Parliament only depended on physical security without any CCTV cameras. The MP further wondered why the security equipment proposed for procurement was not in place.
